THE first few of these tombs are close to the small East door and window, and will be enclosed in the Elliott Memorial Aisle (1) In memory of William Mills, of Oxlynch, yeoman, who was buried ye 18th day of March, A.D. 1692.
Also of Hannah his wife who was buried the 13th day October, 1727. (Old head stone.) (2) In memory of Job Chandler, who died Jan. 28th, 1803. Aged 76.
"Wife and Children, pray all agree
To serve the Lord and follow me,
My days are past, my glass is run,
My children dear prepare to come.
(* This Job Chandler lived at Westrip; he had (consecutively) three wives, by whom he had twenty children, all of whom were baptized, and descendants of his are proud to show the teapot which was used at the family tea party after each christening.)
In memory of Betty, the wife of Job Chandler, who died Aug. 15th, 1758. Aged 67.
Also of two of their children, Sarah and David, who died in their infancy.
In memory of Elizabeth, the wife of Job Chandler, who died Aug., 1777. Aged 39 years (Head stone and flat one.).
Also Rebekah, daughter of Job and Mary Chandler, who died in 1784, aged 6 weeks.
(3) In memory of Solomon Chandler, who died April 8th, 1821, in the 60th year of his age.
(4)In memory of Sarah, the wife of Edward Chandler, Clerk, who died the 10th of May, 1750, in the 48th year of her age. (Brass on fiat stone.)
(5) Sacred to the memory of Thomas Steel, of Whiteshill, in the Parish of Stroud, who died Feb. 4th, 1847. Aged 64 years.
Also of Reuben, his son, who died Jul 15th, 1843. Aged 35 years.
Likewise of Peter, his son, who died Nov. 10th, 1840. Aged 27 years.
And of John, his son, who died Sept. 14th, 1849. Aged 35 years.
And also of Esther Steel, wife of the above named Thomas Steel, who died Aug. 5th, 1885. Aged 73 years. (Brass on fiat stone.)
(6) In memory of William Vick, of this Parish,, who departed this life the 6th day of Feb. 1828. Aged 57 years.

In memory of Rachel, the beloved wife of Charles Organ, of this Parish, Yeoman, who departed this life the 26th day of March, 1850. Aged 79 years. (Two brasses on same flat stone.)

Also of Ann his first wife. She died March 20th, 1832. Aged 47. Likewise of Elizabeth his second wife. She died Feb. 20th, 1835. Aged 34 years.
(8) In memory of Susannah, wife of Charles Organ, of this Parish, Yeoman, who died February 9th, 1826. Aged 42 years.

(10) Sacred to the memory of Stephen Mills, mason, late of the Parish of Haresfield, who departed this life the 11th of April, 1826. Aged 52 years.

(11) T. Mills, Gent., died Decr. 22nd, 1835. (?) Aged 65 years. (Flat stone with inscription cut.)
(12) To the memory of Philip Ambrose, Sadler, who departed this life 14th day of Decr., 1791, in the 50th year of his age. (Brass on fiat stone.)
(13) In memory of Samuel Chandler, who departed this life the 29th day of Aug. 1797. Aged 44 years.
(14) In memory of Joseph Chandler, of the Parish of Stonehouse, wlo departed this life 29th day of August, 1792. Aged 30 years.
(15) Underneath are deposited the remains of Daniel Chandler, of the Parish of Stroud, who departed this life December 13th, 1838. Aged 59 years.

(16) In memory of Thomas, son of Jeremiah and Mary Davis, who died Sept. 4th, 1800, aged 11 years.
"Remember man that thou must die
As thou are now so once was I,

Also of Harriett Davis, who died Jan. 1st, 1818. Aged 4 years,

(17) In memory of Jane (?) the wife of Robert Holder, of this Parish, who departed this life the. . 1750. Aged 84 years.
(18) This stone is erected in memory of Solomon Vines, who died September 29th, 1793. Aged 30 years.
Also of Elizabeth, wife of the above named, who died October 3rd, 1821. Aged 62. (Large and finely ornamented head stone.)
(19) In memory of Rev. David Lloyd, officiating curate of this Parish, who departed this life, September 7th, 1808. . Aged 64 years.
In memory of Sarah Gibson, relict of the above named David Lloyd. She died October 31st. Aged 77 years.
(20) In memory of William Jennings, Esq. late of Knowles Green, Staines, Middlesex, who died April 25th, 1857. Aged 65 years.

(33) In memory of James Cam Pearce, of this Parish, and Sarah, his wife. He died July 1st, 1805. Aged 70 She died Jan. 27th, 1804. Aged 70..
Also of one of their children who died in its infancy. (Brass on old foot stone.)

On the East end of the tomb is the following;-- Here likewise lies the body of Anna Jemima, daughter of William James, Gent., of
Tansawell (?), Carmarthen, wife of ye Rev. Rice Jones, curate of ye Parish. She died
Sept. 6th, 1762, Aged 36 years. (This is the oldest legible tomb in the
churchyard, and consists of a coffer tomb, inscribed with very large letters.)
(35A) In memory of Alice (?), wife of William Lawrence, who died July ye 10th, 1768. Aged 50.
In memory of Joseph, son of William Chandler, who died the 3rd day of March, 1779, in the 32nd year of his age.
(These two inscriptions are on old coffer tomb with inscription to Mrs. Thomas on the top.)
(35B) In memory of William Lawrence, of this Parish. He was Parish Clerk 23 years, and died April 12th, 1710.
Daniel Lawrence, carpenter, died September 14th, 1769. Aged 70 years.
(These two, with another (illegible) are on another coffer tomb, parallel with the last.)
(35c) An old flat stone cracked through the middle, close here, has the following: R. M., 1781.
(36) Here rest until the Resurrection the mortal remains of the Rev. John Elliott, for 72 years Incumbent of this Parish, who departed this life, Jan. 4th, 1891, in his 100th year

Martha, died April 16th. 1825. Aged 3 years.

In memory of Mary Ann Elliott, who departed this life September 30th, 1892. Aged 69.

(38) Here resteth the body of William Arundell, late of Stonehouse, clothier. Who departed this life the 28th day of Aprell, Anno Domini, 1681.
"Who lived Beloved 30 years and 21 Days, But When Death came there gave no Delay and Wayteth Under Neath this stone for a glorious resurrection." (Old coffer tomb close to church wall.)
In memory of Samuel Clissold, blue dier, who died July ye 29th. Anno Domini, 1709. Aged 48.
Also of Hannah, his wife, who died January 29th, 1709. Aged 46.
(39A) To the memory of William Clissold, of the Parish of Stroud, who died Nov. 19th, 1836. Aged 39 years.

(41) Underneath are deposited the remains of Ann Lawrence eldest daughter of Samuel and Mary Lawrence, who departed this life, May 6th, 1829. Aged 17 years.
Also are deposited the remains of Mary Lawrence, wife of Samuel Lawrence, yeoman, of this Parish, who departed this life Decr. 8th, 1842. Aged 54 years.
Also beneath are deposited the remains of the above-named Samuel Lawrence, Yeoman, who departed this life July 21st, 1857. Aged 77.
(42) In memory of Elizabeth, wife of John Lewis, of ye Parish of Stroud, who died Oct. 15th, 1753. Aged 37 years.
(43) To the pious memory of Thomas Chandler, of this parish-Clothier.
He £50 and to our poor he gave £109 to be on Cloth and gave away on St. Thomas' day; and died the second day of Apl., Anno Christi, 1731. Aged 76.
"He was Pious and Sober, Honest and just,
True to his Promise, Sincere to his trust;
To wife also kind and by his last action
Friendly bequeathed to different relations
This gift is to the preacher, and thine ye poor
Are pledges of love that will ages endure.'

Also Elizabeth (?) his wife. Died Feb. 24th, 1678. And of Catherine, their daughter, died the 7th of May, Anno Christi 1709. Aged 22 years.*
(*Through some inadvertency here the daughter is born after the death of her mother, probably a mistake in dates. This tomb is rather illegible.)
In memory of Ann, wife of Thomas Chandler, of ye Parish of Kingstanley. She died Feb. 18th, 1722. Aged 77. (Old coffer tomb.)
(44) In memory of Thomas Bennett, of ye Parish of Stroud. He departed this life ye 23rd day of January, 1761. Aged 75.
'By sin came death ; death brought me to the grave,
By Christ came life, my precious soul to save."

(45) Here lie the remains of Mary, the wife of William Nibblett junr., who died Oct. 31st, 1758. Aged 33.
"An nurtured, tender, loving wife, most dear,
Thro Child-Bed Pains her Body Eke lies here;
Of whom I hope her soul hath took its flight
Into ye joys of endless Bliss and Light."

. (62) In memory of Joseph Parker, a faithful servant to Mrs. Barrow and her family for 46 years. HE departed this life Aug. 30th, 1867. Aged 80 years.
Also of Hannah, relict of the above. She died Jan. 29th, 1869. Aged 84.

(63) Here resteth the body of Lydia, the wife of Thomas Newman. of this Parish, who departed this life the 6th day of May, 1751. Aged 61.

(64) Here resteth the remains of John Hewlett and Sarah, his Wife, late of the Hill. in the Parish of Moreton Valence. He died Feb. 23rd, 1821. Aged 69 years
She died Jan. 30th, 1821. Aged 66 years

Likewise of Sussannah, his daughter, who lies here interred. Aged 3 years.

Also of Thomas, eldest son of Robert and Mary Holmes, who departed this life December 22nd, 1819. Aged 56 years.
Hannah, relict of the above, died the 7th day of June, 1844, in the 79th year of her age.

(80) Sacred to the memory of John and Mary Hopson, son and daughter of William and Edith Hopson, of this Parish. Mary departed this life the 30th day of November, 1773. Aged 36 years. John, after a long and painful illness, ended this transitory life Nov. 27th, 1788. Aged 46 years.
(81) In memory of George Harmer, master of the Charity School of this Parish 44 years, who died March 25th, 1791, in the 70th year of his age.

(101) Sacred to time memory of Hester, wife of Thomas Bassett, sexton of this Parish, who died the 6th of January, 1826. Aged 68 years.
Also of the above-named Thomas Bassett, who died May 3rd. 1847. Aged 92 years. (Brass on flat stone.)
(102) Sacred to the memory of Charles Holder, who departed this life September 27th, 1875. Aged 83 years.
Also of Martha, his wife, who died November 30th, 1861. Aged 71 years.
Also of one son and three daughters of the above.
"In the midst of life we are in death."

There are some tombstones where the inscriptions are quite illegible, many of these being got at with great difficulty. On some, owing to the ground having risen round them, the lettering was below the sur-face, and the earth had to be cleared away first.

On perusing the foregoing epitaphs it will be noticed that in many instances the husband and wife were not long behind each other, in many cases only a few months.
